"It really is a recent phenomenon."ĭeMello and other researchers visited the island for 10 days in March 2015 to study the rabbit communities and interview people. "What you have is too many rabbits for such a small island," says Margo DeMello, president of the California-based rabbit rescue group House Rabbit Society. Estimates vary, but about 300 rabbits inhabited the island in 2007, which grew to between 700 and 1,000 today. Rumors abound that a British couple brought the bunnies to the island, or a nearby school released them in 1971. But experts say the test rabbits were euthanized after operations shut down. Rabbits were brought to the island as test subjects for the chemical weapons, and some people speculate the animals there now are descendants of the originals. There are clearly continuous historical connections linking French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Romanian (the Romance sub-family of languages) with the spoken Latin of the Western Roman Empire of olden times. Likewise, the origin and evolution of the Semitic languages are linked to a specific region-the Middle East- though later movements of people allow a diffusion of languages, as in the case of the Indo-European family. These are languages traced back in the past to Eurasia. The Indo-European family today includes Sanskrit, English, German, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish (Germanic languages). When we trace the origin and nature of language families, studying their present-day classification into Indo-European languages, Semitic language family and so on, it becomes clear that there is a strong link between the movement of peoples in the very earliest times, development of several individual languages and locations where the languages are spoken. Link between Languages, Migration and Geographical Areas: Language and culture are mutually indispensable language can have developed only in a social setting in a specific area or geographic location and human society in any form can be maintained only among people of that area using a language that all of them can understand. The faculty of language acquisition and use is innate and inherited by humans but the language of a person is acquired by that person as a member of the society. Language is a part of culture, where culture refers to all aspects of human life insofar as they are determined by the fact of being members of a society. But, the impracticability of speculations on the oldest language of the world is now too apparent. In Christian Europe, Hebrew, the language of the Old Testament, was believed to be the oldest till the nineteenth century. Some ancient Greeks like historian Herodotus were of the view that Phrygian was the oldest language of mankind. There have been attempts to cite a specific language as the oldest lang. While it is true that outside influences affected the origin and evolution of language in an area or in a community, it is also true that there is rich linguistic diversity-adjacent communities even speak different and mutually unintelligible languages. So we see that language, as it originated, did not spring from a certain place or in a certain community uninfluenced by outside factors. This is because the Greeks adapted Phoenician consonantal script to represent the distinctive consonant and vowel sounds of Greek. Now, take all of the weight off of your knees and into your toes so that your knees are hovering a few inches off the ground (while still bent). Get on all fours with your wrists under your shoulders, knees under your hips, and toes on the floor. This actually looks a lot like the prep we just went over for push-ups. One of the basic moves of Animal Flow is the Loaded Beast. The idea is to connect with our bodies to make them more strong, mobile and coordinated. Animal Flow is low to the ground and mimics the way animals move. The “Loaded Beast” comes from an emerging type of workout called Animal Flow. The same general rules as the push-up apply, but gravity will do much more work for you while your body gets strong enough to move to the next upper body strength variation. Press your hands on the wall and keep your toes a couple of feet away from it. You can also opt to push up while standing next to a wall. If that’s too much, keep those knees on the floor. Bend at the elbows until they reach 45 degrees and push back up. You can have your hands below your shoulders or just slightly farther out. Get into that high plank position again (as seen above). Push-ups are great upper body exercises that will work out your arm muscles and build shoulder strength. You probably know where we’re going with this one, but we’ll remind you to keep your push up form where it should be. There’s no need to move fast with this bodyweight training position or any other strength training exercise studies show that bodyweight training works even at slow speeds. Move back and forth between these two compound exercise positions to get your body warm and your arms, back, and shoulders ready for an upper body workout. Make sure you’re pushing away from the floor and maintaining a neutral head (look at the floor, not straight up at your hands). Now, all you have to do from here is shift back into a Downward Dog: allow your hips to press up and back so that your legs are at about 90-degrees to your torso. Engage your core muscles to maintain a flat back and keep your tailbone tucked in. Come up off your knees while straightening your legs out so that your hands and toes are the only points touching the ground. Start on your hands and knees with your hands directly below your shoulders. This core strength move is a great start to any workout routine because it’s super simple and activates the entire body.įirst thing’s first: get into a high plank position. One unusual aspect of the 1918 flu was that it struck down many previously healthy, young people-a group normally resistant to this type of infectious illness-including a number of World War I servicemen. (Even Spain's king, Alfonso XIII, reportedly contracted the flu.) It’s unknown exactly where the particular strain of influenza that caused the pandemic came from however, the 1918 flu was first observed in Europe, America and areas of Asia before spreading to almost every other part of the planet within a matter of months.ĭespite the fact that the 1918 flu wasn’t isolated to one place, it became known around the world as the Spanish flu, as Spain was hit hard by the disease and was not subject to the wartime news blackouts that affected other European countries. In just one year, 1918, the average life expectancy in America plummeted by a dozen years. Victims died within hours or days of developing symptoms, their skin turning blue and their lungs filling with fluid that caused them to suffocate. However, a second, highly contagious wave of influenza appeared with a vengeance in the fall of that same year. The sick, who experienced such typical flu symptoms as chills, fever and fatigue, usually recovered after several days, and the number of reported deaths was low. The first wave of the 1918 pandemic occurred in the spring and was generally mild.
